Gun Control
by rtasson2
I came across this picture the other day on twitter. I believe that this picture holds a lot of controversy and the hypocrisy in American towards gun control. In class, we have discussed whether or not we would feel safe if we saw someone walking around with a gun. We all view guns as a dangerous weapon, however, it is used at the same time to protect people. Cops, most security guards and any type of guard figure has a gun as back up with the intention for criminals to fear them. To ensure society and authoritative figures safety, a gun is used for protection. Whereas, in elementary and high schools they have signs that say gun free zones, yet, shootings still occur. I think this creates a huge inconsistency between viewing a gun as a weapon of protection, and using it only for those means.

self defence works, pacifist hoplophobic dogma, does not.
I think this photo shows the prominence of guns in the United States and how they are relied on so heavily throughout society. I believe this speaks to how firearms – particularly the right to bear arms- is so greatly entrenched in American ideology. I think it is easy for Canadians (and other cultures) to make the assumption that guns aren’t necessary because we haven’t placed the same importance on gun ownership nor do we have the same commonality of gun ownership amongst our citizens. However, in a society that has embraced gun ownership in every aspect of their culture is becomes much more difficult to change these practices. The right to bear arms has developed as a foundational aspect of American ideology – if that is removed their is suddenly a complete restructuring of a culture/society that needs to occur. This photo shows how difficult it would/will be to remove or place greater limitations on firearms ownership because they are used in every aspect of society.
High profile require armed guards since they are in the spotlight and there are a lot of ‘crazy people’ out there who would wish them harm for no other reason than because they are famous.
The people who are carrying these guns — the people that protect the individuals and institutions in that visual you posted — are trained security/body guards who have years of formal training and are adequately trained to use a weapon.
So there are a lot of variables that are not taken into account with visuals like this that are tailored to make brief points.
